How Student Loan Repayment Works

Student loans in the UK are nothing like a traditional bank loan. You only repay when you can afford to — and any remaining balance after 40 years is written off entirely.

Only repay when earning over £25,000/yr

Below the threshold? You pay nothing.

Just 9% of income above the threshold

Earning £30k means ~£37.50/month.

Payments stop if income drops

No penalties, no debt collectors.

Doesn't affect your credit score

It's not a traditional debt.

Balance written off after 40 years

Whatever's left is forgiven.

Student Finance FAQs

To qualify you generally need to: be a UK national or have settled/pre-settled status, have lived in England for at least 3 years before the course start, be studying a qualifying first higher education course at an eligible institution. We also help students with more complex situations — contact us to discuss your circumstances.

Apply as early as possible — ideally in February/March before your September start. Applications open each year via gov.uk. You can apply before confirming your university place. Early applications ensure your money arrives on time for the start of term.

You only repay once you've left education AND are earning over the threshold (currently £25,000/yr for Plan 5). You repay 9% of income above the threshold. After 40 years, any remaining balance is written off. It doesn't affect your credit score.

It depends on your previous study. SFE usually funds your first higher education qualification plus one additional year (called the 'gift year'). If you've studied previously, contact us — we can assess your specific situation.

Notify SFE and your university immediately. Future payments will stop. Any overpaid maintenance loan may need to be returned. Your existing loan balance remains and is repaid under normal income-based rules — you won't be chased for immediate repayment.

Allow at least 6 weeks once you've submitted a complete application. We strongly recommend applying as early as possible to ensure funds arrive at the start of term.
